$ perl -MDate::Simple=today -wle 'print today() - 1'
2010-03-28

(Update:) Of course this can be generalized to get the previous date from any other date: 

$ perl -MDate::Simple=date -wle 'print date("2010-04-01") - 1'
2010-03-31

Or in fact going any number of days forwards or backwards.
