Another way to do it might be to just run the output of the sort through another filter like so: 
my %seen;
my @sortthetutors = 
       grep { !$seen{$_->{tutorsID}}++ }  
          sort { $a->{tmiles} <=> $b->{tmiles} } @tutorsdata;
