so it came to pass, that i am looking for an answer for a question that happens to be my handle as well :] i am looking for a nice, clean, portable way, to get the current load average on a system.

preferably
-using only core modules
-no pipes to uptime or reading from obscure /proc files

basically, something like python's os.getloadavg()
