There is no bad pattern, that's my point. Encoding unicode data as UTF-8 will not only work today or in one particular case, it will always work.
But you have to know what you're doing, of course. And someone simply substituting Latin-1 for UTF-8, for me, falls into the category of not knowing what you're doing.
