Is there a version conrtol system (open source please) best suited to this task?
Why the request for 'open source'? You haven't even used a version control system yet, but you're now already settled that you want to modify whatever you're getting? But if you don't plan to modify it, why open source? Or did you write "open source" when you meant "I don't want to spend a penny"? ;-)
