I don't think those are the only two reasons for open source. I use Linux because I like it better than windows, and i like that security issues can be found and addresses by lots of people because its not a closed source. Perl is open source, i don't use it because its free, and i like that its opensource because that keeps it moving forward. Just seems like an error in your reasoning to think that the only reasons people want open source is to edit it, or get it free.
