The short answer would be to use the uniq function provided by List::MoreUtils.

What you have here seems incredibly complicated. Compare with the function I've just mentioned:

sub uniq (@) {
    my %h;
    map { $h{$_}++ == 0 ? $_ : () } @_;
}
