Recent versions of CGI.pm default to producing XHTML output. Non-bracketing tags like your <img tag end with />. This is compatible with typical HTML browsers because of the space preceding it.

Use the -no_xhtml pragma to inhibit this:

use CGI '-no_xhtml';
