See the on-line docs (also available locally as part of the standard Perl installation via  perldoc perlre etc.) perlre, perlrequick, perlretut, perlreref, and the PerlMonks Tutorial Pattern Matching, Regular Expressions, and Parsing.

All this is quite a lot to swallow, but regexes are as complicated and subtle as they are powerful, so hang in there!
