Switch that to:
chomp( $mystring = readline( $fhr{ $host } ) );
In theory, you can also use curlies to disambiguate:
chomp( $mystring = < {$fhr{$host}} > );
but I've encountered situations when that didn't seem to work. readline seems preferable anyway.
