You should ask your employer which technology to learn, but in the meantime, learn different programming paradigms, it makes learning different technologies easier.
In the alternative, pick a topic you find interesting (say bioinformatics), and contribute to an open source project (bioperl) as a means to simultaneously build experience (resume) expand your knowledge (of bioinformatics).
Learn a new language, and learn its idioms and best practices, and practice.
