Has anyone ever attempted to access an Alfresco repository using Perl?

I think it might be possible using SOAP and the Web services supplied with Alfresco. I've also read that there might be a restful approach through Atom Pub.

As I start this project, I'm wondering if anyone has ever attempted this. Any advice or pieces of scripts (working or non-working) is much appreciated.
