hi i am new to perl, i have a doubt

Read perlintro#Simple substitution 

    s/foo/bar/; # replaces foo with bar in $_
    $a =~ s/foo/bar/; # replaces foo with bar in $a
    $a =~ s/foo/bar/g; # replaces ALL INSTANCES of foo with bar in $a
