It's probably a one line fix in the nodelet code:

return if ($USER->{node_id} == $NODE->{author_user});

This has come up before among the janitors. It seems like the rough consensus was that it's not wrong to approve your own node for the frontpage, but it's usually a little gauche. Then again, I don't speak for the rest of the janitors, and we don't seem to generate a large amount of SoPW questions either. :)
