Try using a flat array as the data structure and indexing it as  Matrix(m, n) => Array[m*ncols + n] or Matrix(m, n) => Array[n*nrows + m] depending on whether you think row major or column major will be better for you.

All these clones, are they all for good reason or would it be worth considering some kind of copy on write scheme?
