Some people could want to use something like this instead, same result, different notation 
$test = 'C:\first\second';

print $test, "\n";
$test =~ tr,\\,\/,;  

    #or $test =~ tr [\\] [\/]; 
    #or $test =~ tr <\\> <\/>;
    #or even $test =~ tr .\\.\/.;

print $test, "\n";
