Also, the inclusion of  -wMstrict as a general rule in such command line invocations can be very enlightening: 

>perl -wMstrict -el  "print 'hi there!';"
Bareword "l" not allowed while "strict subs" in use at -e line 1.
Execution of -e aborted due to compilation errors.
