I'm sure that is a typo. Writing an XLS is done with Spreadsheet::WriteExcel (old format) or Spreadsheet::WriteExcelXML (new format).
You can also read spreadsheets with Spreadsheet::Read which is just a wrapper around the available parsers, giving you a unified API for all type of spreadsheet formats. That will support the not-yet-existing Spreadsheet::ParseExcelXML soon after it is available.
