don't get me wrong. Most of the time you don't need to configure/set up your own SMTP Server. Exchane is a fully standart compilant SMTP server which you can use with perl. And most of the time you din't need to change anything you only need to ask you mail admin(and may be firewall admin) for right settings. I don't know how you comany is handling such requests from my experience most of time you will be allowed to use the current architecture.
