I'd alternatively suggest (from the MySQL manual) :

• If you mainly mix INSERT and SELECT statements, the DELAYED attribute to INSERT will probably solve your problems.
  
  
• If you have problems with SELECT and DELETE, the LIMIT option to DELETE may help.
