The tests fail for me too. What I do is this: First, make sure that you have libgd installed: 
/opt/ActivePerl-5.14/bin/cpan

[download]
Then at the shell prompt: 
cpan> notest install GD

[download]
Try that, then let me know what happens. I've a few tricks up my sleeve:).
