I disagree with chromatic more often than not, but I at least find it worth skimming what he writes, and he has recently been doing good work explaining how a set of recently-added and not-really-thought-out features were mistakes: Part of the reason these things don't work is that Perl was already a pretty complex language, and maybe that's a strike against Perl. But it's mainly a strike against shoving new features into the language without considering their consequences. The same kind of rash "cool-hunting" at a different time would have seen inside-out objects or who knows what other nonsense baked into Perl.

For better and worse, Perl is a mature platform (like ANSI C), and should act it.
