Obviously the OP was around the 'net in the early to mid 90's when the web started growing, and the only thing people used on their sites were animated gifs (kill me, please) and blinking, screaming marquees.

Like he said... horror. You can't undo that kind of psychological torture, so you almost feel it when entering a site before you see it :)
