Perl interfaces well with many other services and applications
<sarcasm> Yes, because if you can program in Perl, you can program in XS! There are almost as many XS coders as there are Perl coders!</sarcasm>
as many libraries to make such tasks easier available on CPAN.
Yet, the haydays of Perl where in the mid to late 90s. When CPAN was a lot smaller. CPAN is still growing, Perl much less (and many would argue Perl is in decline because other solutions grow harder).

So, CPAN isn't the whole answer of what makes it suitable for automation.
