I don't think it hurts to read up on the guidelines, etc. though one can certainly take that too far. With that said, something that may be more beneficial would be to read some of the early threads on here, such as the famous paco thread and 1st Monasterians, and this more recent (relatively speaking) node that discusses the history of PerlMonks: Re: www.perlmonks.org - story.
