It's funny. I was going to ask a question about pipes as well, however for this, I would recomend: Parallel::ForkManager. http://search.cpan.org/~dlux/Parallel-ForkManager-0.7.9/lib/Parallel/ForkManager.pm. Great stuff for controlling forks.
