If you're worried about making a big boo-boo yourself, you could always use an alternate chatterbox client, such as the Java Chatterbox. The / behaviour is adjustable, and legal /commands are on by default.
It says it's alpha, although I found it pretty stable. Sometimes it'll freeze up in which case the only thing left to do is to close it and start up a fresh copy.
These days, of course, I use framechat2.
