I'm experiencing some problems with DBD::InterBase (the Firebird 2.1 driver).

If you want a driver for Firebird, I'd recommend to use DBD::Firebird instead. I know that for a long time, the interbase driver was recommended for firebird users, but the new firebird driver has the advantage of being maintained.
