With regards to method 1: Your SQL is at fault for the completed file being empty. It should read (Note the "2")

      CREATE TABLE completed
      AS SELECT final2.username,HCDir2.branch,final2.date_modified
      FROM  HCDir2
      INNER JOIN final2
      ON final2.username = HCDir2.fullname
