Hi snafu, good points from many others, just thought I'd point out that with 
    map { push (@status, $_)    }
    map { split(/\n/,$_)        } $raw_data;

you're throwing away the results of the outside map. Wouldn't this... 
    @status = split /\n/, $raw_data;

[download]
do the same thing? Or am I misunderstanding?
