For me, synchronicity is everything, and today I happened to refer to a post by drzowie to answer a PDL question. As it happens, drzowie just released a youtube video showing usage of PDL::Graphics::Gnuplot. It has a very neat example at the end, where an image is mapped onto a 3d contour.
