The simple answer is yes by forking and closing STDIN/STDOUT the child process can work independent of the browser and will not abort. For more ideas see this column on dealing with long running/slow CGI processes by merlyn

Also a Super Search for 'Long running CGI' or similar will find lots of threads. For example forking in a cgi script
