I am an idiot -- I long ago turned off the chatterbox, and have been mystified ever since about why I am never informed when someone replies to one of my nodes.

I wonder if the chatterbox could be optionally split into two parts -- a "public chatterbox" and a "personal chatterbox" aka "messenging center". This would not only allow you to receive your personal /msgs without being constantly distracted by the public chat, but also by disallowing sending public messages in your personal chatterbox, you could prevent the common mistake <sfink> /mgs vroom I think you'd better run the script that artificially introduces longer and longer delays for that TimToady guy. He's talking about what a piece of junk he thinks Perl6 is again. So even people who want both public and private chatter might use the separate nodelets rather than the current combined one.

Update: chromatic's solution gives me pretty much everything I care about -- it doesn't solve the /mgs problem, but that hasn't been a major issue for me so far. Thanks, c!

The /chatteroff command disables public chatter. I don't remember where it's documented, but it seems to do what you suggest.

/chatteroff is documented in the Chatterbox FAQ (scroll up half a page from this anchor-link). The ChatterBox FAQ is a good resource for general CB questions.

++ Both for a good suggestion, and for the courage to admit the I word. [I'm not an idiot, but I play one on TV.]

belg4mit's suggestion might work for the obsessive-compulsive type [check for mail, check for mail, check for mail], but others (myself included) need to be hit over the head sometimes.

Perhaps an extension of belg4mit's would be to put the Message Inbox on the Personal Nodelet (make sure it's active).

BTW, /chatteroff is documented at Chatterbox FAQ, under How do I use this?.
