I do something similar. I use a Linux-based firewall box at home. I have a daemon I wrote (in Perl, of course!) that every three minutes check the IP address, and emails me if it has changed.

The address it emails is the SMTP-to-SMS gateway for my cellphone, which I always have with me. It's a pretty handy solution.
