And so, to explain to an unbeliever what the difference is doesn't work. To the unbeliever, Jesus doesn't/didn't exist or was some sort of lunatic, so why would there be any difference? Because of this, I'm going to state a number of things that I hold to be true that you may not agree with, but must be allowed for the sake of argument, for without them, there is no difference at all.
Jesus Christ is the son of God, and is, himself, God. (I know that's confusing ? it's a paradox) He was born on earth fully man and fully God ? again a paradox. He was perfect, yet he was condemned to die a criminal's death on a cross. Three days later, he rose from the dead, conquering sin and death. Because of this, we can be forgiven of our sins. Forty days later, he ascended back into heaven.
So for Christians, Jesus was, and is, more than just a man ? way more than an imaginary friend. He holds the way to heaven; he alone is our salvation. He is God ? he controls all things, can give us peace, etc.
I don't/didn't mean to preach to you, so please don't be offended. :-) If this didn't answer your question properly, or if you have something else to ask., let me know.
