Oh well :(

I'm also using Math-Pari-2.010501 and pari-2.1.5, reinstalled from scratch and exactly the same problem. I wonder if it's a gcc issue?

gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.3 2.96-110)

    I think you might find that is the case - that version of gcc on RH was buggy in a number of respects IIRC

      Indeed, especially since there was never an official gcc 2.96 release.
