Hmm, setting usemymalloc=y doesn't seem to have helped. Though it does seem more than likely that glibc 2.2.5 is indeed the problem.

    Do you mean you reconfigured and recompiled Perl with the -Dusemymalloc option passed to ./Configure? This is something that can only be changed at build-time, not at run-time.

      Sorry, yes, I did rebuild perl - I am not quite naive enough to think these things can configured at runtime.
