On keeping folks motivated:

• Give them context (eg how what they're doing matters to the Big Picture).
• Keep them learning.
• Help them move up.
• Where possible, share the upside.
• Have a humane and friendly workplace.
• Encourage a balanced work/family perspective.
• Treat everyone decently.
• Never lie.
