You may have heard that Yet Another Society (the organisation that brought you YAPC) is trying to organise a fund whereby the Perl community can sponsor Damian Conway to work full time on Perl for a year.

It will cost $55,000 to 'buy' Damian from Monash University for a year.

I've just heard that we only need another $8,000 to achieve this, so I'd urge anyone who hasn't already done so to visit http://www.yetanother.org/damian/ to pledge some money.

    Well, we did it.

Thanks to large donations from Blackstar, VA Linux, Manning, Stonehenge and O'Reilly and a stack of smaller donations from individuals, we have raised tha money required.

    Full details at http://www.yetanother.org/damian.

This is actually to fund him for a year in Australia. We will have to pay more to have him here.

Ah... but in this modern tele-commuting age it really doesn't matter if he's in deepest Australia or "here" (wherever that is!).

His planned itinerary does, however, include a number of teaching and conference trips to most other continents during the year.
