digitally sign XML Document

piyush.shourie has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi Fellow Monks,

I need your advice on digitally signing the XML document.
There can be 2 scenarios of signing the XML doc:

1. Digitally sign the whole doc
2. Sign only selective components of the XML

In case we need to sign the whole doc, we may use Crypt::OpenPGP module.

However, the problem lies in signing the XML document selectively. Please suggest some way to do this.

How about wrapping the parts you want to sign with a tag like this: `<specialPart signature="FCC8DB26CBB972B478FB080736B33953"> ... </specialPart>` [download] Update: It seems that jfroebe has already given you a pointer to this Introduction to XML Digital Signatures in which the topic of signing specific portions of a document is addressed. There is an interesting project going on at the Victorian public record office in Australia. It's called the Victorian Electronic Records Strategy (VERS) standard.
