Please read The Absolute Minimum Every Software Developer Absolutely, Positively Must Know About Unicode and Character Sets (No Excuses!)

Your terminal seems to expect in Latin1, while Perl outputs UTF-8. You should have gotten warnings along the lines of Wide character in output, though.

Makeshifts last the longest.

    I got a warning a couple weeks ago from a friend who saw a wide character in the buffet line, but no, never any such warnings from Perl. Just the ugly output. Thanks for the link!
