I've always wondered about these speed trap things. I think in some ways this is a moral issue. It would be like a website detailing the police routes and when they are in certain places, or when certain buildings security gaurds are gone. It just has a slimey feeling to me. Is there something legitimate here, because normaly help is not provided here for illegal or immoral projects. I'm not saying this is either, or that you shouldn't get help with it, mostly I'm just curious why you think this is a good project and what makes it okay?

Way Off-topic: Where i live, speed traps are SO common that everybody gets a slimey feeling about the police, for setting up the speed traps, and their boss, a Mr. Koos Spee, for setting the quota. The police force must write at least so-and-so many speed tickets a year (10.6 million on a 16 million population). Not very usefull information but i felt the need to write it down here ;-)	[reply]

Still way off topic: Speeding is just wrong. Many people tend to do it, without any regards or understanding of the problems. Higher gasoline prices, worse accidents, more dangerous streets, etc. Kind of like people who write code without thinking. Now,a good use for a map server might be locating businesses in your local area, setting up instructions to get to a party for your children, and many other things.	[reply]

Still wildly offtopic ,) I dunno how it is in the US, but radio shows here have free phone-in lines, where you can report where the speed traps have been set up. Presumably condoned by the authorities. My take on this is that the whole point of the exercise is to get people to slow down. People who KNOW where a speed trap is, will slow down for it. So, purpose achieved! This makes it a good project to me. C.	[reply]

Yeah but now the more irresponsible ones will speed in areas where they know they won't be caught. I don't think it's a legal issue, but an ethics issue; I would feel pretty uneasy doing this. Although I always wanted to implement a mapquest-like image generator - I went as far as downloading GIS files! :) Anyway, sorry for OT.	[reply]

The idea is to trap these freaks with another trap. No radio show can report all speed traps. Of course the show could mention "Speed traps in L.A.", but who doesn't know that already?	[reply]

The police want you to drive slower and have less accidents. If knowing where the spped traps aer makes you drive slower there, then they are happy with it. This isn't a new project, and many police representatives have been interviewed about it. The effect is to make people obey the law when they wouldn't, not make them break the law.
