in reply to Your kung fu is excellent but what about...

I don't think stylesheets are one iota better than FONT or CENTER tags. Sure, the world could be a lot better, but it isn't. The vast majority of the sites that use stylesheets use style sheets in such a way that without the stylesheet, the page becomes incomprehensible.

Really, what's the difference between replacing an h1 header with:

<p align = "center"><font size = +3 color = "green"> <b>This is a header</b></font>
and replacing an h1 header with:
<style> p.woof {text-align: center; font-size: 150%; color: green; font-weight: bold;} </style> <p class = "woof">This is a header
It still doesn't degrade gracefully.

    The answer is "not a whole lot". But, there is a world of difference between your examples and:

    <style> h1 {text-align: center; font-size: 150%; color: green; font-weight: bold;} </style> ... <h1>This is a header</h1>

    Especially so if your CSS is only linked to with something like

    <link rel='stylesheet' type='text/css' href='/css/site.css'>

    What people are entirely failing to realize about CSS as opposed to FONT/CENTER tags is

    1. The point is to separate style from content
    2. Doing so makes it easier to make site-wide style changes
    3. And, it allows people with visual impairments or other special circumstances to override your style choices in their client.

    That has nothing to do with CSS and everything to do with the designer behind that stylesheet being unable to comprehend how content differs from presentation. The difference is that without CSS, you cannot even begin to make that distinction in a suitable fashion.

    Makeshifts last the longest.
