The temporary file is itself a multipart MIME message. Putting it through the MIME parser will give you pieces of regular HTML you can put through any parser. (I recommend a look at Ovid's HTML::TokeParser::Simple.)
(On closer look that's what Util is doing, except he didn't say so explicitly. So look at his code.)
Makeshifts last the longest.
