John Whitney has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I'm creating an application to control specific devices over the web via a PC. I originally created the application using HTML & IE 4.0+ as the front-end GUI and a localhost Perl server for the back end. It worked great but was confusing to the users, confusing to install, slow to load, and dependant on the user's IE settings, amoung other issues. I'm re-writing the application as a single Perl application using Win32::GUI as the front-end user interface.

I need help with the machanics of various Win32::GUI things such as, how to set the background color of a window, how to let user select a file on their PC using the standard windows file browse window (maybe done in Win32::API), etc. I'm fairly good with Perl, but also need help there too.

Able to pay $25/hour to someone to guide me over the phone/email/in person. Person needs to know Win32::GUI, Win32::API, and Perl. It would not be a lot of hours, maybe 1 to 2 hours per week, here and there. Possible we can trade this help for online marketing/sales help from me for your project, as that's an area in which I have successful experience with.

Look into The GUI Loft, it can take care of many of those small technical details for you.

You probably won't have too much trouble finding specific help if you can post specific examples of what you have tried so far, and what specific functionality you want to implement.

If you are looking just to hire someone, you might want to consider emphasizing what functionality you want, rather than asking someone to help you learn Win32::GUI.

That's not to discourage you, it's just that: 1) the two goals (learning Win32::GUI versus delivering your product) may be mutually incompatible; 2) you might get more bang for your buck if you emphasize what you want as the end-result, instead of emphasizing a specific toolset; and 3) it may be likely that you are overlooking something (perhaps some code that already does what you want) via Perl TK, WxWidgets, or even IE-based code that could leverage the work that you have already done (see e.g., Bindows or HTA).

    Just some tidbits to consider.

Why Win32::GUI? Why not Tk, Wx, Gtk, etc?
