Are you sure it's really double-spaced not UTF16?

To open UTF16 in Perl5.8 

 use Enocde;
 open my $fh, '<:encoding(utf16)', 'somefile' or die $!;

    The origional Document is UTF16 I started with a UTF16 .XML file I'm trying to Strip out all of the XML tags and parse the text using regex expressions... DBrock...
