So today I checked our FatBrain.com affiliate program info and was surprised to find some of you were actually following links from the Buy Stuff page and buying stuff. So since I'm all about the idea of money for nothing I added an ISBN field in book reviews. If you add the ISBN number the cover image from Fat Brain will show up as well as a "Buy Me" link.

Another thing I was considering was adding an ISBN:// linking convention so you could refer to books in your writeups that way... what do y'all think?

Great idea; I especially approve of it in O'Reilly's case, since they've been so gracious (see The Word from O'Reilly; thanks d4vis too!)

I think an ISBN:// linking convention would be nice. I am willing to add it to the book links in my homenode as soon as it is available.

Is there any way Perlmonks could get credit for other (non-Perl) books? I buy a lot of books through Fatbrain, but not all of them are Perl (mostly because I already own the Perl ones).

In theory if you go to the buy stuff page there's a search form for fat brain. In theory if you search through there we should get credited for any books you buy in that session. Our affiliate id is transferred in the url on the search and a cookie gets set with a session id which hopefully maintains that information since it isn't passed in the url after that. If you try it let me know and I'll check if we get credit for that purchase.

Okay, I tried it out. I watched the links and cookies as I went, and you are right - the affiliation ID disappears after the first page- hopefully it is stored in their "cookie jar" on their server (at least they are doing things the correct way, unlike many (most?) sites). Let's see if this works!

I also noticed that you can enter a "discount code" after you place the order and log in as a returning customer. Perhaps perlmonks could get a code to use there as well?

I also noticed while poking around (tip of the hat to ybic) that the Buy Stuff page has an affiliation "From" for the book links and the "Quick Search" box, but not for the "More Info" and "Related Titles" hyperlink. I might humbly suggest that we give perlmonks credit for people clicking these links as well, if it tracks as the search box does.

Final update: it works! You can use the search link to buy any book at Fatbrain, and perlmonks gets the credit.

As you are thinking about "tuning up the engine" I just thought about this style of linking convention for other things as well. Most apparent seems to me something like CPAN:// so it's easier to link to a module over there or extended as SCPAN:// to link to the results of a search on CPAN.

    Have a nice day

If it's easy to do, do it. I don't mind a reasonable bit of commercialism easing the flow of new posts =)
