revitalization/reimplementation of old character-based games I saw recently is http://www.wjduquette.com/ramble/index.html, based on ideas of old NetHack game.

It is implemented in Tcl/Tk
I downloaded 'kit' version at http://www.wjduquette.com/ramble/ramble0.3.kit and had fun time playing with it: I succeeded obtaining Golden Underwear for a King, and thus saved them all!
