Hi monks,

Yesterday I went through some nodes like Religion in the Monastery., in which they have described this site as a perl community, where gods, saints and monks are present like many other religious community in the world.

After that I was thinking about that for some hours on that topic and some thoughts were going in my mind, I want to share them with you and to get your opinions in those.

Always work might be sometimes boring, there should be some fun in our life, to add some cheese into that, here is my opinion, there are many religious day celebrations in the world like christmas (Dec 25th) for christian community, valentine's day (Feb 14th) for lovers to honor Valentine etc., why don't we have a day 'PM day' to honour and remember the works contributed and the dedications by our saints, vroom and others in our community.

If you are asked to select a day for 'PM day' to celeberate like valentine's day, which day will you select and what will be the reason to select?

Add your ideas, opinions and suggestions to honor our gods, saints,vroom etc.

I leave this for your discussion.

If you feel, it is crazy, I apologises for that.

Prasad

    What crazy ideas we get when our mind is allowed to freely wander ;). If there was a PM day it would have to be Dec. 23 because PM was started on Dec. 23 1999 (as seen in Perl Monks turns 5). I'll leave others to decide how to celebrate this ;).

    Perl has been called foolish looking for quite a while now, so how about April 1st? Deep down I think most monks can relate to that personally, so it's time to wear it like a badge of (dis)honor.
      I've always admired the number of ways many religions honor fools. Not to mention pop music.

    July 11th as that is the day Christians remember Saint Benedict who is considered to be the founder of organized monasticism. What better day to honor our Monastery?

    You would want a semi-random pick for the day so we don't have unintended co-incidental 'meanings' so ...
    I hear that vroom's birthday is September 20th

    (and, no, the timing of Luna 16 is wrong so we can't explain vroom that way! :)

    Create a Perl script to pick a random month and day, hahaha :). Just kidding, just reading over the reasponses I have seen, I second kutsu's suggestion of Dec. 23, it seems logical :).

    I was not lurking around the monastary, yet, so I have not picked up on many of the honored tradions, but maybe have people post obfu that prints something like "Happy PM day," we could call them JAPM :). It would all be dedicated to those saints who have made this great community what it is today.

    The day we reach 500,000 posts will be PM day, to be replaced by the day we reach 600,000. And so on. What does our revolving around some big bag of flaming gas have to do with our special days, anyway?

      Wouldn't it then be the case that PM days would be separated by much more than one year apart?

      And do you know something about vroom's diet that I don't? (Who're calling a big bag of flaming gas?)

        Wouldn't it then be the case that PM days would be separated by much more than one year apart?
        No. And I've the one-liner to prove it.... ;-)

    Good question and good idea. we can celebrate the dec.23 of perl monks start day. Because all can easily remember the perl monks started day.

    On that day, all members will think perl for a minute definetely

    Special days can be used to celebrate and they can also act as a marker to note what has happened in the past year. So what use would a 'PM day' be? I can think of a few ways it could be useful:
    • Perl hackers could set up a 'social' meeting of their local Perl Mongers group to celebrate Perl Monks. We could also contact other monks or other Perl Mongers groups in the area and have a bigger get-together;
    • A date marker like New Years to say, 'What have I done on PM in the last year?', 'Do I have goals for Perl advocacy?', 'Did I hit my XP goal for the year?', etc.
    • A day to tell other people about Perl Monks;
    • A day of reflection: where is Perl Monks today, what has happened in the last year, what goals does the site have for the next year?
    • Maybe serve as a date for people taking new site responsibilities or passing them on. This would allow people to take roles for a set time.
    • And of course another big day for the gift-card industry as the inevitable flood of Perl Monks cards, computer toys, and other paraphernalia hits the market;

    So I think there are lots of fun reasons to have a special day.

    Now as for when, Dec. 23 might make for less participation due to some other things happening that time of year. I think I like the July 11 idea.

      Yada, yada, yada. Who cares about that list? All we want is away from the office. No work to go to. And good food. Lots of it. Just like Christmas - but without the family. (Unless you married another Perl hacker).

    I kinda lean toward the idea of a semi-random occurance, possibly starting with Dec 23rd as the first such annointed day. I'm not sure WHY I like that idea...

    So, exactly how fast do 100,000 posts get made to PM anyway? (on average, obviously)

    -Scott

      It takes 344 days 13 hours 20 minutes and 16 seconds, Sir (estimated ;-).

    This sounds like a wonderful idea!

    Can we set it up so Hallmark has to buy back our used over priced cards, and FTD will happily purchase back the wilted boquets? Since the gods have been good to us, we could donate the returns to the offering plate.

    Enjoy!
