I'm not sure I understand the task, but, perhaps:  $_ = thatroutine() ? return $_ : undef;

    I guess you're missing a set of parens there: 

    ($_ = thatroutine()) ? return $_ : undef;

    $_ ? return $_ : undef for thatroutine();
#or simply 
return $_ if $_ for thatroutine();
